tux3d

Tux-penguin is a legendary character for all IT specialists. It is a symbol of a free / open-source OS - GNU+Linux. We've attempted to create its 3d model. We've made the mesh with Blender and textures in Inkscape and Gimp. Our Tux character is designed for massive 3d environments and augmented realities. Most of the 3d models of Tux that we've seen were designed to be rendered into a static image or a movie. On SourceForge we've found awesome artwork by S. Baker (https://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxaqfh/) that can be used in interactive virtual environments. The main difference is that the file should not contain unnecessary mesh detail. Nevertheless, we've decided to create our own from scratch.

Also we've stumbled upon a very cute sound recording of penguins https://freesound.org/people/Bidone/sounds/66150/, which we've used in our sound track, dedicated to this occasion https://archive.org/details/PenguinsParadiseTG202B2. These sounds have made us think that soon we will all end up in a kind of z🐷🐸. Although many start to realize now that we are in a zoo anyway. 🤔kay, this is a long story. It's only important that from time to time in this zoo appeared someone like Torvalds or Āryabhaṭa, for instance...

Of course the concept of "zero" was, perhaps, used in the valley of Euphrates, Nile and Mekong rivers and maybe somewhere else. It works this way - we take someone's ideas, improve on them, adapt them and in this way open up new possibilities for everyone.

It is a similar story with Linus Torvalds. He created the kernel of Gnu+Linux, which (the kernel) is also used now on Android, the most widespread OS for mobile devices. It is interesting that December 9, 2018 marks 50 years after the first presentation of a working concept of personal computer interface.


 So we at tonux.gix for a long time wanted to integrate it into our project and now it is a good occasion for it. One of the ideas which might also be useful in virtual 3d environments is that semantically similar things should also be located close to each other in space. In the process of building our biggest Nux-project we were thinking about a place which might be related to 3d-printing.



One of the simplest yet powerful 3d-editing software is Blender. It is fully free/open-source and cross-platform application. Naturally, it works best on Gnu+Linux. Gnu+Linux is probably the most comfortable environment for everyone who treats creativity as a way of life, as breathing. But there is one annoyance for all Linux-lovers: some hardware vendors make it difficult to free create software that would work with their devices. So GNU+Linux users often exchange information about machines that work best with Linux. So we decided to create space for this near our 3d-printing house.


All of this is not a finished "product." It's more of an artwork in progress. On the screenshot you can see that we have made this place to be similar to a small cozy toy shop. We all loved toys in our childhood. Unfortunately, in our "molecular" reality such places disappear over time. Perhaps it's one of the reasons why we are creating this virtual environment - it's a desire to preserve something important. I think that the virtual material has many possibilities in this regard.


We are all very lucky to live in this unbelievable era of new possibilities. I think very soon we will be able to 3d-print far more than just new devices... All files and sources we've made from scratch and you can use them without asking any permission. This subproject is released under the CC-Zero public domain dedication.


We have also made a simple rig for it, that is a system of virtual bones that is used in games and for rendering. You can open this file with Blender or convert it to a different file format. You can create your own movement and animation. Currently it doesn't have any pre-made walk-cycles and other standard movements. It's likely that in near future these animations will be created using artificial neural-nets, but this is a different subject. For now, thanks for being with us.
